It’s no secret that Jameis Winston wants to start at quarterback for the New Orleans Saints and stick around for the upcoming season. The problem is, the teams that the former top selection seems to be a better fit for are the Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, and Las Vegas Raiders.

Though Winston played for the Saints for four years, there are indications this summer that the two teams are splitting up. If the quarterback is released by the team, the Saints will be responsible for his $10.7 million dead cap. Winston might leave the squad, even though it seems improbable given that they are above the cap.

In 10 games as a starter, Winston has passed for 2,367 yards and 20 touchdowns against 11 interceptions in his four seasons in New Orleans.

The problem is that, as the starting quarterback for the Saints, Derek Carr will already be using up a sizable portion of his $30 million contract for the upcoming season. Given that Winston is seeking a larger purse and a position as the starting quarterback, this detail alone guarantees his departure.

There are a few teams that might be a better match for Winston if he were to leave. In his piece on CBS, Cody Benjamin provides additional details:

The charming backup will probably be back on the market following a four-year stint with the New Orleans Saints, when he made just ten unpredictable starts, according to reports citing a recent contract restructuring.

Winston is seasoned, a popular presence in the locker room, and he still has a flashy arm, but he hasn’t been able to maintain consistency in his health or control the ball when forced into significant action. Projected AAV: $4M–$5M | Bills, Broncos, and Raiders are the best teams fit, according to Benjamin.

Winston will undoubtedly have an opportunity to perform better on the floor against these teams than he did against the Saints. Should he attend one of these, it would be fascinating to observe how his career develops from there.
