Happy news: The QB decision would be confirmed by this free agent signing.

The indications are still strong that the Chicago Bears will deal quarterback Justin Fields in the upcoming weeks in order to clear the path to choosing Caleb Williams with the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Although Fields’ development in the quarterback market may cause the Bears general manager Ryan Poles to postpone the deal until after the first wave of free-agent signings next week, Poles would have preferred to have finalized the transaction by now.

That does not imply that before then, Bears supporters won’t be officially informed of the QB selection.

Naturally, the Bears may want a seasoned backup quarterback in the quarterback’s room next season, if they are in fact working toward giving the franchise to Williams.

Last summer, Tyson Bagent, an undrafted rookie quarterback, agreed to a three-year contract with the Bears. Bagent cannot be the Bears’ backup quarterback going into the upcoming season, especially with the team expecting to contend for a postseason berth and starting a rookie quarterback.

This is the reason it would be a hint that the Bears are really moving on from Fields in favor of Williams if they do sign a veteran quarterback at the end of the first round of free agency next week.

The Bears may consider veteran quarterback Gardner Minshew. With his experience in the game and ability to cover if the starting quarterback gets hurt, Minshew—who was Jalen Hurts’ backup during the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl run—would be a great fit for the Bears. The addition of a quarterback such as Minshew would relieve Bagent of the responsibility of filling in for Williams in the event of an injury.
