Unexpectedly, Geno Auriemma has a negotiating chip against WNBA veterans, stating…

Some people think that older players who are envious that they did not receive the same degree of attention when they entered the league have treated Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever and Angel Reese of the Chicago Sky unfairly because of the attention they have drawn to the WNBA. Geno Auriemma, the women’s basketball coach at UConn, discussed that dynamic and the best course of action for WNBA players.

Geno Auriemma stated, via @VanshayM on X, “[Caitlin] and Angel Reese are the two most talked about players in the WNBA right now, but they’re not the two best players in the league.” Going back to your point, if you’re one of those players, you can whine and cry about how nobody mentioned you when I was here, or you can accept the situation as it is and make the most of it right now. However, the game will inevitably come up at some point. It won’t be about everything that happens outside of the court or in extracurricular activities. They will all eventually need to be exceptionally talented.

Auriemma recently stated that there should have been some expectation that Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese would struggle and that the expectations placed on them are unreasonable. As rookies, the seasoned WNBA players were not going to allow them to come in and dominate, and Auriemma pointed out that Clark in particular would need to wait a while to be physically prepared to play against WNBA opponents. He also stated that if Paige Bueckers, a star player for UConn, were to play in the WNBA right now, there would be no shame in it.

In any case, the league benefits from the small competition between Clark and Reese. The Fever and Sky have faced off three times now; Indiana won the first two before Chicago triumphed this past Sunday in the third meeting thanks to a performance by Reese that was her best in the WNBA thus far.
